I’ve always had an issue when it comes to drawing hands and it’s becoming such a burden. It’s just so difficult to capture the true essence of a hand so I always just start giving up when I get to them. And then I end up wanting to rip the entire sketch up because it feels incomplete. Then again an artist never really finishes his work; he merely abandons it.

You’re not the only one – hands really are difficult to draw. I would say to add more detail to the palm/back of the hand area (creases, wrinkles, shading) and also the nails. And don’t forget the little “bumps” that make the knuckles. It’ll look less cartoon-y that way. You could also try drawing your own hand as practice. If all else fails, just shade shade shade! Lol. It’s amazing what a little shadow and highlight can do to add dimension to a drawing.
Hope that helps. Nice piece, btw.

Patience, patience, patience, patience, patience. Patience is an art in itself, the more you take your time on your piece especially with hands the better it will come out. Are your really, really, really, really, really looking at the hands. Do you see the impressions that make up finger print? How about where the light in the image touches the dark in the image. Patience… Really gaze and take ur time with the sketch.

i suck at drawing hands too
i remember in high school, i swore i’d be a fashion designer. i thought i was pretty good but i’d get to the hands and i’d always have them… either tucked behind their hips. in some type of s-curve, or i’d make abstract paw like shapes LOL
hands are an art within themselves, and you’re not alone in struggling. i went to art school with top artists who admitted that they had to practice to get them right (and some who i felt still could use more practice).
if you’re serious about improving, i’d suggest picking up some books. there are entire ones dedicated to body parts and also, fashion books tend to have interesting approaches for drawing hands.
try it out sometime and post your progress.

I still draw stick figures lol so you got one up on me. Besides, I notice the eyes first. I have to snap out of it after I look in them lol cuz they look so real. The hands are a tad bit big thats all. Once you get the hands down pact youll be a beast. With some patience and practice you can sell them bad boys. None the less its a great picture.

Hi Alexis,
I’ve been reading your blog and watching your vlogs for a few months now and I just have to tell you that you are an amazing person (don’t worry, I’m not a stalker, lol). I hope you never abandon your website like most people have throughout the years. But most importantly, I hope you never lose your passion for art.
I’ve had a lot of difficulty drawing hands myself. I think you did an awesome job. All I can recommend is to make the fingertips a bit thinner. Otherwise it’s perfect.
This may be offensive to you (and I hope it’s not) but I’ve really been meaning to tell you that you should pursue your dreams, set long-term goals for yourself, pursue those goals, better yourself, pursue an education, market your talents, get noticed, be the woman you want to be before life passes you by. We’ve all been torn between doing what we love and doing what’s guaranteed but you can do them both – it’s been done.
Much love,
Jessica

I must say your hands are amazing compared to my e.t looking hands. What’s worse is i’m in an art class.
I don’t know if this is anything you could learn from but my art teacher says thats how you can know who went to art school or not. If they draw good hands theyve learned, if not they usually won’t attempt to draw them.
Don’t be hard on yourself. Maybe you should consider art for a living . . .

hey, well, great artists always have a trademark of sorts, something that you immediately identify with that certain artist’s work… so, yours can be bad hands lol…. see a picture of the Mona Lisa and she has man hands? it’s an Alexis Belon original !

This is so good! I know what you mean about the hands. They’re huge and I am not sure if that’s the reason my eyes always avert back to the hands! It could be because you mentioned them, but you’re a true artist. All Taurus people are gifted in art. That’s the shit you don’t read in astrology books.
